Widnes Woes

It’s been a very tough season away from Lowmoor Road and this fixture proved to be just as difficult as the rest.

Widnes scored an unconverted try within the first minute to lead 5-0. The Wigton players then played with plenty of passion and with lots of good possession but as in most games this season, were unable to turn possession into points.

Widnes survived a15 minute onslaught from Wigton but without the ball the Wigton players struggled to hold the Widnes backs and 4 tries were scored in quick succession to give the home side a comfortable lead of 27-0 on 30 minutes.

Wigton continued to attack and sustained pressure resulted in a try for Aron Henderson, converted by Ryan Clark. A Wigton comeback was soon forgotten as Widnes notched up a further try before half time to turn round with a handsome lead of 34-7.

The second half began in exactly the same fashion as the first half with Widnes scoring within a minute and then proceeding to score 4 quick tries and now held a commanding lead of 65-7.

Nevertheless, the Wigton team with 3 players in the first team for the first time this season continued to play positive rugby and were finally rewarded when the forwards drove a maul over the line with Richard Jackson touching down, Ryan Clark kicked a very difficult conversion and the final score was 65-14.

Congratulations to Widnes on a convincing attacking display resulting in 11 tries.

A long and difficult season has ended and Wigton will look to regroup for next seasons battles in North Lancs/Cumbria.
