Relegation was confirmed for Wigton on Saturday with a 19 - 47 loss at Wilmslow.

The following report is produced with thanks to ever-present away supporter Alan Lynch who's notes from his 'little red book' form the basis of the summary. It is also worth reading the opposition report for an honest assessment of Wigtons contribution to the game.

Timeline - 20 mins - 0 - 15
40 mins 12 - 30
60 mins 19 - 35
80 mins 19 - 47

Wigton lost Marrs, Brough, Prentice, Stephens, Thorneycroft and Smith from the winning Vale squad so a relatively young side travelled. Colt Jake Twentyman took up the wing berth with Stephen Harris moving to centre. It was a regular front row with Aron Henderson and David Waning in the 'engine room'.

Obviously a bit slow out of the blocks - competed well through middle 40 and tired to 2 late scores. Score flattered the opposition a little and did not reflect effort / commitment from Wigton. Set play went well throughout, scrums and line out functioning well - caught out a bit by their wide game and a spring afternoon perfect for running rugby.

Strong finish to first half - try on 30 mins following strong pick and go plays in their red Zone gave Dave Hanabury the chance to score in the corner, benefitting from a smart Ledingham offload. Full Back Ryan Clark confirmed his all round progress this year with a successful touchline conversion. More effective play from the 'Greens' took play in close and a strong line break from Lindsey Walker resulted in an opportunity for young centre Stephen Harris to crash over.

From the restart Wigton continued to play with ambition stringing together several phases of play. The breakdown work of Story, Henderson, Jackson and Nicholson was significant in this area whilst the experienced midfield trio Ledingham, Hanabury and Moffatt excelled on both defence and attack. Indeed it was Richard Moffat who scored the third try after a typically robust line break and pacy run as he rounded the full back to touch down from 30 meters - Clark again tagged on the conversion.

Wigton kept up the attacking intent and were within inches of a fourth try when the ball was turned over and Wilmslow countered for a 90 metre converted score to finish the game.

M O M was shared between John Story for a typically robust effort up front and David Hanabury who also confirmed he is getting back towards full fitness with a typically courageous defensive stint allied to a number of telling contributions in attack. If only…… illness and injury rehab have restricted them to 8 appearances out of a possible 46 this campaign.

Onward, three more opportunities to exploit!
