Wigton suffered a heavy defeat at Warrington, however the 54-0 scoreline didn’t reflect the effort put in by a young Wigton side with an average age of 23.
Gregg Smith made a welcome return at full back but Steven Harris missed his first game of the season and regular no. 8 Stuart Creighton was also unavailable. Aron Henderson and Sandy Graham made their first team debuts at no. 7 and no. 11 and Sam Harrison came off the bench towards the end of the game for his first appearance.
Despite the high score, Wigton competed well early on and following missed penalties for both teams, it was 17 minutes into the game before Warrington registered their first points on the board with 2 quick tries. A further penalty and a try just before half time gave the hosts an 18-0 lead. Wigton’s problems were compounded with Lindsay Walker leaving the field with an ankle injury after 29 minutes.
Wigton started the second half with a lot more possession and with several phases of play, it looked like Wigton would finally get some points on board. However, due to a number of dropped balls and some mystifying decisions by the referee, Wigton remained pointless.
Similar to the first period, it was not until 16 minutes into the half that Warrington scored the first of 6 second half tries. It seemed that every time that Wigton made a mistake, Warrington would finish up with a try. Six of the 9 Warrington tries were scored in the corners, mainly due to overlaps, making it difficult for the Warrington kicker.
The final score of 54-0 was well deserved by a powerful and determined Warrington team but the Wigton players never gave up and were unlucky not to put some points on the scoreboard.
