Mike Penrice reports on last Saturdays action from Lowmoor Road.

Wigton were frustrated in their efforts to record their first win of the season by an inconsistent performance against Warrington on Saturday. This was an eminently winnable match for the home team, but indifferent tackling, lack of composure when handling and a below par set game meant we had to satisfied with a bonus point for four tries.

Wigton started brightly with a Charters penalty opening the scoring. Shortly afterwards came an incredibly long passage of play with both sides having chances to score but failing to retain possession - a penalty from Luke Wood terminated affairs.

Wigton's next attack came from a midfield scrum, the ball was moved to full back Charters who ran deep into the Warrington 22. A penalty ensued and good forward pressure saw Andy Brown go over for an unimproved try and 8-3. However, Wigton were unable to kick on from this good start with Warrington dominating the next phases and despite a yellow card their backs launched attacks from all parts of the field.

From good possession midfield, they broke the midfield defence and Luke Wood danced through and converted his own try which gave the visitors a 8-10 advantage.

Wigton's defence will have been disappointed with the next try which saw winger Hughes run 60 metres before being hauled down close to the line by a Greenwell tackle. His inside pass went to ground rolling in goal, where the alert Andy Roberts reacted smartly to touch down amongst a group of players. 8-15.

Wigton reacted well pushing deep into Warrington territory from the restart, a penalty was pushed to the corner but the line out drill failed and the chance was lost. Warrington countered well, winning a penalty which was kicked by Wood 8-18. Another good response saw Jackson and Brown drive deep into the 22 but as a try looked on a knock on brought the half to a close.

Wigton started well down the slope, with the debutant fly half slicing through in midfield but the resulting rucking was deemed illegal and Warrington countered and after several phases the coup de grace was delivered by hooker Hughes who evaded two ineffective tackles to score and Wood tagged on the points 8 - 23.

Warrington had their tails up now, strong running from lock Callender again broke the defence and smart handling saw winger cross in the corner and round to the posts for a formality conversion giving a comfortable 8-30 lead.

On the Wigton side, stern words were spoken and the home team were galvanised into action enjoying their best spell of the match.

A penalty from the restart saw Wigton progress into the 22 and following a series of forward drives Sessford was finally rewarded with a try. Cory Bouch had come on to replace Jonny Charters and his conversion attempt hit the post. 13 - 30.

Wigton 's next attack came from an attacking line out, good interplay saw Greenwell (now at fullback) run deep into the 22 and his inside pass put Moffat on a run to the line and his strength took him over despite a tackle on the line. 18 - 30.

Things continued to improve with some creative play from Bouch in midfield, he linked well with Andy Brown who in turn produced a sublime offload to send Gregg Smith on his way to the posts for a converted score, at 25 - 30 the home supporters were excited at the prospect of an unlikely win.

The momentum was now with Wigton as they charged upfield from the restart. However, there then ensued a 10 minute break as quite rightly the referee stopped the game. A Warrington forward suffered a head injury in an accidental collision and though he recovered he had to be helped from the field.

Wigton had possession from the ensuring scrum but they were penalised for wheeling and the previous momentum was lost . Indeed the break had allowed Warrington to regroup and it was them who were able to close out the game. Wood calmly kicked the penalty taking the score to 25-33 and then after a botched restart, Warrington attacked the short side and it was Steve Pilkington who won the race to a deep in goal kick. Woods conversion saw him contribute a crucial 20 points to the game.

Wigton will take some encouragement from the fight back from 8-30 down to be in with the chance of a win but the coaching team will be hoping for a good turnout at training this week as they look to correct some of the avoidable mistakes that have been made. New Brighton will pose a significant challenge next week, after opening their winning account at the expense of Penrith we are unlikely to find them in charitable mode.

The match ball sponsors 'C H Jeffries of Cockermouth' had a difficult decision for man of the match with strong performances, particularly from Jackson, Brown and Marrs up front and the consistent Moffatt behind. However, it was a standout display from skipper Andy Brown which saw him deservedly take the award.

Presentations were also made to Robert Marrs for '200' appearances and Richard Jackson who has achieved his '50' milestone. Robert played his debut game versus De Le Salle in September 2005. Richard' s opening game was in 2011 away against an impressive Sandbach XV.
