A strong first 40 minutes from Warrington was enough to seal victory for the home side - coach Brown reports.

Wigton had first use of a strong wind blowing end to end and from the off were to dominate the first 10 minutes of play with scoring opportunities in both corners which unfortunately were not converted.

Warrington were compact and direct in response and made excellent use of some dynamic outside backs. Their first score came after a key turnover and quick hands took them deep into Wigton's half. An astute cross kick was poorly defended allowing centre Steve Pilkington to cross unopposed.

On 15 minutes Wigton appeared to have snuffed out another Warrington counter but a harsh penalty in midfield allowed them to add 3 points - 8 - 0. Wigton in return had a penalty shot to open their account and Tom Gardner was unlucky as his attempt shaved the post from 50 metres.

Warrington dominated the next 15 minutes scoring twice, firstly smart handling put Ashley Rockey away on an overlap and then a pick and go play resulted in young prop Joel Barker burrowing over. Neither score was converted - 18 - 0.

Wigton responded well and some inter passing between Gardner, Miller and Ledingham took play up to the red Zone but a key line out was lost and came to nought. Throughout the game scrum time was even but with lineout forwards Lee , Atkinson and Story missing Warrington had the edge in that area. Losing key lines was to prove costly as the game developed.

With the last play of the half Warrington scored out wide. From a 5 metre scrummage they executed a neat short side play for Kieran Hughes to cross and at half time 23 - 0 - an ominous score line with 40 minutes playing into the wind to come!

The Wigton squad had 2 options, roll over and be stuffed or turn up and get in the game.

From the restart they took the game to Warrington - Deans broke the line on the first of a number of significant charges upfield, this was the catalyst for 40 minutes of robust rugby with Deans, Marrs, Creighton and the impressive Gardner all improving on a quiet first half.

Dave Hanabury was running the midfield to good effect and on 45 minutes following a great Andy Brown turnover , he broke the line 30 metres out and outran the remaining defence to score. 23 -5.

Wigton were now dominating the midfield game and playing with confidence, smart handling from Gregg Smith put Tom Gardner away on 2 powerful runs into the Warrington 20 and Warrington were forced into killing ruck ball to prevent quick possession - this led to the first of 2 yellows for similar offences.

It was against the run of play that Warrington were able to counter from a dropped pass and Kieran Hughes took advantage to score 5 - 28 .

Wigton continued to take the game to Warrington and dominated the last Quarter, however they only managed one further score as Hanabury once again broke the line deep in home territory and timed an excellent pass to Tom Gardner who crossed. 10 - 28.

At full time Warrington had deserved their win on the back of an impressive first 40 - Wigton can reflect again on the importance of being more clinical and converting scoring opportunities when they present themselves - more patience and precision in the red zone would help their cause. As can often be the case, both sides will reflect on playing their better rugby into an impressive blow. The win secures Warrington's league status for this season; Wigton still require further league points to cross that particular threshold.

The travelling supporters were party to some excellent hospitality from their hosts on what was Wigton's first ever visit to the Warrington club. The jury sat, and were unable to reach agreement until well after Tebay: Will Miller held off strong support for four other backs to take M O M - 'Come on Wigton'!
