Coach Brown reports on a huge performance - and result - for the 1st XV!

Wigton had first use of a strong end to end wind and with Hanabury and Smith finding effective touchline gains were soon on the attack.

On 4 mins the ball was moved wide to Steve Harris on the wing - he showed good pace and awareness to beat his man and was twice involved in link play which saw Centre Rich Moffatt crash over - Tom Gardner tagged on the 2 points and the 'Greens' were on the move. 7 - 0.

On 10 mins AK got their first points through a 30 metre penalty 7 - 3. Wigton were soon back on the attack and from a strong scrum the ball was moved to midfield where Hanabury, Miller and Smith linked well for Gregg Smith to score out wide. An excellent touchline conversion by Gardner took the score to 14 - 3.

AK again responded well and a defensive lapse saw them cross and make it 14 - 8. Within 2 mins Wigton had bounced back - some good hands from Ledingham and Creighton put Tom Gardner away and he made 40 yards before offloading to Dave Hanabury who drew the last defender and put flanker Matt Atkinson over 19 - 8.

On 24 mins it was debutant Harris who again initiated an attack right up to the AK line, the ball was recycled quickly and Gregg Smith and Andy Brown combined well to put Moffatt over for his brace and a try bonus point. Again Gardner got the conversion and a few minutes later he also kicked a 30 metre penalty and Wigton had a deserved lead 29 -8.

The Wigton scrum was dominant at this stage and more effective back play on the front foot put Tom Gardner on an overlap run to the corner and again he converted well 36 - 8. As half time approached AK managed to get good field position and a converted try made it 36 -15 at the break.

AK were quick to make use of the conditions and kicked themselves into the Wigton 20, from a scrum some slack defending allowed them to cross for a converted try taking the score to 36 - 22 on 45 mins.

Wigton had to work hard as AK put together their best spell of the game and for 15 minutes dominated territory, however they kept the line intact and finally on 65 mins were able to counter up to the AK line they showed patience to develop a number of phases before No8 Stuart Creighton capped a strong display by driving over from short range. 41 - 22.

Changes after the try allowed young forwards Elliot Armstrong and Ryan Wannop to join the fray, replacing Andy Prentice and Andrew Bell; Steve Harris was also replaced by Scott Smith.

An excellent length of the field counter almost brought a 7th score as Russ McLean broke out of his 20 to release Hanabury and Atkinson, the ball was fed on to Gardner who was tackled right on the line. Wigton were penalised at the resulting ruck and AK cleared their lines. The final score of the game came in the 85th minute and went to AK following a run of penalties against the Greens which took play into the clubhouse corner . 41 - 27.

So the away voodoo was finally put to bed for this season. All 18 players contributed to ensure that those 5 vital league points were secured, it was a win and performance 'Made in Wigton' with all the lads coming from the Junior/ Colts stable.

As they have done all season, our faithful travelling supporters were present in numbers and finally they had a win to ease the long journey home. There were a number of strong performances to consider but from a field of Creighton, Brown, Ledingham, Moffat and Gardner it was Fergus who opened the port to lead some well earned celebratory moments. Older more gnarled sages on the touchline spoke well of the Front Row Union who also manned up well.
