Malcolm Brown reflects on an away day at Wilmslow.

With only 4 away games remaining the odds on an away win this campaign are lengthening.

The absence of settled combinations within the group does not help our cause, once again on Saturday a number of players were out through work commitments, injury or holiday.

The report on the Wilmslow site is an accurate and well written account so click there if you want a longer read.

Wigton really needed to be in front at half time having had first use of a tail wind, so it was bit disappointing to turn round 3 points behind. It allowed Wilmslow to peg us back with excellent field kicking and defend well around half way as we tried to counter.

Although they had the wind Wilmslow failed to break us down through ball carrying and it probably reflected how tight the game was when Bob McCallum opted for the drop goal to take them to 14 -5.

Our scrum and maul were going well and that was reflected in the build up and scoring of our second try by Matt Atkinson on 73 mins. Tom Gardner's successful kick set up a rousing finale at 14 - 12.

The lads pushed on again to try and take the game and it was an unfortunate dropped pass on our 40 that was hacked on to a goal line scramble and Wilmslow try.

A bonus point was taken home; we saw debuts for full back Charles Studholme and last years Colt Ryan Wannop in the second row; Elliot Armstrong, Andrew Prentice and Scott Smith all had full 80 's.

The travelling supporters group had Rob Marrs, Andrew Prentice and Richard Jackson on their scorecard and the versatile Jackson playing this week at 6 topped out. Ryan won his 'drink off' with Charles who failed to complete the course.

Two weeks for the Greens to prepare for the visit of league leaders Wirral to Lowmoor road on Saturday 8th February, whilst on the same day the Wanderers are at Penrith to take on their 2's.
