After last week's tryless home win over Whitehaven last week, Wigton got back to try scoring ways again this week with a bonus point victory over Bennies at Mirehouse. Mike Penrice reports.

St Benedicts went into the match after three wins in a row and were unbeaten at home this season.

Both clubs put out strong lineups. Bennies were missing prop Jamie Jardine, whilst Wigton still await the return of Andrew Bell. Jordan Wood failed a late fitness test and was replaced by Callum Studholme, returning to first team action after several months out with injury. Mark Deans made the lineup after some doubts in midweek over a calf injury. Skipper Matthew Atkinson also returned after last week's absence.

Wigton had rolled up their sleeves during the week and had worked hard at training to try and recapture the fluency that had been missing against Whitehaven. St Benedict's, when they are at strength are capable of overturning any team in this league and were determined to give Wigton a shock. Their lineout performed well with Scott Wood looking impressive and Daniel Appleton caught the eye in the backs. However their scrum was under pressure all afternoon and they suffered with a lack of discipline. Kristian Wood was yellow-carded for a stamp on John Story. Referee Dean Lythgoe also showed a yellow card to scrum half Mark Rouledge for dissent. On top of that, Wigton's defence was as misery as ever having had some fine tuning from Cumbrian Super League star Ewan Dowes during the week. For the third game in a row the Greens prevented the opposition from crossing the try line.

Wigton got off to the best possible start, scoring the first try after just two minutes. The driving maul had been blunted last week, but it was back with a vengeance. Mauling took the ball into the home 22 and Mark Deans was driven over the line for a try which was converted by Ali Ledingham. This put down a marker that Wigton meant business.

Deans scored another after 24 minutes. David Hanabury's raking kick set up play ten metres from the Bennies line. Wigton took the ball at the lineout and mauled over with the smiling Deans getting up with the ball. Skipper Atkinson had mixed feelings; he tends to get on the end of these driven mauls and he was unable to mark his return with a try.

Jamie Doran narrowed the gap to 3-12 with a well struck penalty from forty metres out.

After 36 minutes Wigton got the scoreboard moving again. After play went through several phases, a clever chip by scrum half Fergus Ledingham was seized upon by winger Callum Studholme who outstripped the defenders to celebrate his return with a try. A good touchline conversion made the halftime score 3-19.

Coach Brown rang the changes in the interval, introducing Peter Dobson into the propping role and bringing Richard Jackson on to hook. The moves were a success and Jackson took four balls against the head in the second half.

Possession was pretty even in the second half but Bennies struggled to break through the defensive line. Stand off Hiddlestone tried to use the strong breeze to make ground, but Wigton's back three of Studholme, Miller and Ali Ledingham ran the ball back with gusto and linked effectively with centres Moffatt and Smith to have options available.

Wigton's next try was a long range effort. An impressive scrum drive provided a platform for Fergus Ledingham and No 8 Atkinson to combine and release Miller on the wing. He made forty metres and then offloaded to Hanabury in support. Whenever Hanabury has the ball in the open flanker Lee is not far behind and this was no exception. The marauding Scot was on his flyhalf's shoulder to score the try and round off a seventy metre move. Ali Ledingham's kick took the lead out to 3-26.

St Benedicts enjoyed a good share of possession and resisted Wigton's attack for half an hour before the pace of the Wigton backs prevailed against a tiring defence in the last few minutes.

A weary clearance kick was caught by Ali Ledingham. He launched a sweeping attack with Miller and Smith playing their part before the ball was passed to Richard Moffatt who ran the ball in from fifteen metres, to create a final scoreline of 3-31. Moffatt was awarded Man of the Match for a display which featured rock solid defence and improved handling.

The coaching staff were well pleased with this performance which addressed all the areas of concern from last week. Coach Brown will want to be able to pick from strength next week as Wigton travel to Aldwinians for what is expected to be one of the hardest games of the season.
