Wigton dominate in the rain at Eccles

Wigton travelled to Eccles with 8 players unavailable from last weeks convincing victory over Burnley. However, the Greens dominated for most of the match and came away with a well earned victory.

Wigton got on the scoreboard after only 3 minutes with a Ryan Clark penalty following an offside decision against the home side. Following a period of play inside the Wigton half without Eccles troubling the try line, Wigton seized the initiative and were camped within the Eccles 22m. After 4 consecutive penalties, the referee lost his patience and showed a yellow card to the home side. From the ensuing scrum Dave Hanabury weaved his way past a couple of defenders to score Wigtons first try on 26 minutes, Ryan Clark slotted over the conversion to give Wigton a 10 nil lead.

Three minutes later a period of great passing play allowed David Hanabury to burst through a gap before offloading to Elliot Armstrong who dived over the line for Wigtons 2nd try, converted by Clark to increase the lead to 17 nil. Although there were no further scores in the 2nd half Wigtons scrum was excellent pushing Eccles back time after time whilst the line out was dominant with Jamie Warwick disrupting nearly every one of Eccles own throws.

The wind and persistent rain made kicking difficult but Wigton continued to keep control of the ball with Eccles gulity of giving away too many penalties and suffered a second yellow card for offside. The game petered out towards the end but a 17-0 win was a tremendous result for Wigton with the whole team playing a huge part in their first away victory of the season.
