Martin Tickner reports.

Wigton travelled to Salford to play De La Salle with four players missing from last week's victory over Aspatria.

Della started with the greater urgency and it was no surprise when their attacking play paid dividends with an unconverted try in the corner after only 5 minutes. The Wigton forwards started to get into the game and a period of forward domination was rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts, duly converted by Ryan Ckark to reduce the deficit to 5-3.

Wigton were now playing a fluent game and seeing plenty of the ball and only an heroic effort by the Della defence prevented Mark Deans from barging over for a try. This stirred the Della attack back into action and on 27 minutes secured a second try under the posts allowing an easy conversion to extend their lead to 12-3.

Della kept up the pressure and scored a 3rd try just before half time and although the conversion was missed they held a healthy half time advantage of 17-3.

The second half began with Wigton pushing back the Della scrum, however the ball squirmed out of the side of the scrum and after being collected by a Della player the Wigton defence was caught napping and excellent passing along the backs provided Della with a bonus point try in the corner extending their lead to 24-3.

Wigton regrouped and were now having their best period of play, with Dan Reed making an interception and despite heading for the line, the Della defence was quicker and prevented a certain try. Wigton were awarded a tap penalty and the forwards took over with a series of pick and goes before Jamie Warwick touched down for Wigtons first try, converted by Ryan Clark to reduce the score to 24-10 to give Wigton some hope of a fight back.

Despite Wigton pushing forward and probing for an opening it was Della who had the final say with another try along the line giving a comfortable victory of 31-10. Wigton played well in patches but were unable to puncture the Della defence and the attacking threat from the Della backs caused Wigton problems and were deserved winners. As usual Della were great hosts.
