Wigton travelled to Oldham for the final game of the season and came home with a deserved 23-20 victory.
Wigton started on the ascendency and with an early penalty converted by Gregg Smith quickly followed by a try by the same player, the team led 8- nil after 14 minutes. Oldham got a foothold in the game and were rewarded with a try and then a penalty to level the scores at 8-8. On 33 minutes Wigton were reduced to 14 players as Andy Brown received a yellow card for a deliberate knock on.
On 40 minutes the Wigton forwards were camped on the Oldham line and a yellow card was shown to an Oldham defender for infringing, Gregg Smith kicked the penalty and Wigton were back in front at 11-8. Oldham came straight back and scored a converted try right on half time to lead 15-11.
Wigton started the second half positively and following great barging runs from Ralph Johnston and Ryan Clark, the ball was offloaded to Aron Henderson who crashed over the line, Smith converted and Wigton were in front 18-15. On 63 minutes the Wigton forwards set up a maul followed by a series of pick and goes and Richard Jackson eventually managed to get the ball down over the line, the conversion was missed but Wigton held an 8 point lead at 23-15.
With 5 minutes to go Oldham snatched another try to reduce the arrears to 23-20 but the Wigton team held out for a fully deserved victory. This was a terrific performance from a relatively youthful Wigton team and their heads never dropped even when Oldham took the lead with tremendous performances from captain James Brough, Richard Jackson and man of the match Richard Moffatt.
