Martin Tickner reports back.

Wigton hosted a resurgent Aldwinians team who after a slow start to the season are beginning to find some form and proved to be a difficult team to break down.

Both teams shared the early possession and after a smart move at the back of the scrum orchestrated by Andrew Brown he released scrum half Fergus Ledingham who found a gap in the defence to score Wigtons first try under the posts after 8 minutes. Ryan Clark converted to give Wigton an early 7-0 lead.

Aldwinians pushed forward and following some clever play between the backs, the ball was kicked through and the Aldwinians winger managed to touch down ahead of the Wigton defence, the conversion was successful and the score was 7-7. Wigtons captain David Hanabury unfortunately had to leave the field with a leg injury with the back line having to be reshuffled.

Wigton were now in the ascendency and after a series of infringements by Aldwinians, the Wigton forwards drove over the line on 33 minutes with second row Alex Johnston touching down to increase the lead to 12-7. At this point 17 year old Ralph Johnston was brought into the fray for his first appearance and within minutes of coming on, he collected a pass on the 22m line and brushed through a series of tackles before barging over the line for a brilliant try easily converted by Clark to give Wigton a half time lead of 19-7.

Within seconds of the restart Ralph Johnston was again in the thick of things collecting the ball midway inside the opposition half and with a mazy run again brushing off the defenders he crossed the whitewash to give Wigton a bonus point try converted by Clark and Wigton were ahead 26-7.

Aldwinians were no push overs and came back strongly and on 65 minutes reduced the arrears to 26-12 with a well worked try through the middle of Wigtons defence. The game continued to be competitive with both teams having a fair share of possession until the final minute when Richard Moffatt broke through a stern defence to score under the posts, Ryan Clark converted and as the final whistle was blown Wigton had overcome a resolute Aldwinians team to win 33-12.

Ralph Johnston who is part of the Falcons academy squad was a revelation on his debut and deserved his man of the match award.
