Wigton kicked off in bitterly cold conditions hoping to take advantage of a blustery wind behind their backs.
Despite Wigton being in control of the early stages, it was not until 18 minutes when Andrew Brown playing in an unfamiliar position of inside centre scored in the corner. Despite Dan Reeds best efforts the wind was far too strong to enable him to kick any conversions.
On 23 minutes a Tyldesley player was shown a yellow card and from the resulting scrum, Owen Bonney raced along the touchline to score Wigtons second try. The Tyldesley players tried to kick their way out of defence which was having an adverse effect as the ball was being blown backwards over their heads and putting them deeper into trouble. On 34 minutes James Brough scored a third try and Wigton led 15-0 at half time.
Any doubts that Wigton hadn’t scored enough points in a wind assisted first half were quickly dismissed with the 4th and bonus point try by Ryan Clark in the 1st attack of the second half. This was quickly followed by a well worked try in the opposite corner by winger Aron Henderson and the Wigton lead was increased to 25-0.
The hosts were now in total control and despite Tyldesleys best efforts they were unable to have any meaningful possession as the Wigton scrum dominated throughout. On 63 minutes Owen Bonney scored a sixth try and Stuart Creighton rounded off proceedings with a seventh try on 71 minutes.
The whole team were superb bearing in mind the awful conditions and the sponsors (Abbey Electrical) voted David Hanabury who was instrumental in piercing the Tyldesley defence several times as Wigtons man of the match. Wigton will be travelling down to Tyldesley this weekend for the return fixture hoping for a similar result.
