Wigton defeated local rivals Silloth by 13 points to nil in very blustery conditions to claim a well earned 4 points.
The strong wind made a passing game difficult but the Wigton forwards were up for the task and took control early on. A Silloth forward was the first of 4 players shown the yellow card for an infringement in the ruck. Wigton seized the advantage and following a line out the pack drove over the line with Stuart Creighton touching down, the difficult conversion was missed but Wigton led 5 nil on 9 minutes.
The game was getting a bit feisty and following a series of punches, a Silloth player was shown the yellow card which arguably should have been a red whilst Richard Moffatt was undeservedly shown a yellow. On 40 minutes following hard work by the forwards, the ball was passed along the backs and Stephen Harris touched down, although the conversion was missed, Wigton held a 10 nil lead at half time with SIlloth rarely breaching the solid defensive line of Wigton tacklers.
The second half followed a similar pattern with whichever team were able to adapt to the conditions having the upper hand. An offside decision against a Silloth player on 65 minutes gave Jonny Charters a penalty which he duly kicked between the posts and the lead was extended to 13-0. A fourth yellow card was shown to Wigtons Colin Sessford for an infringement with 7 minutes to go.
The Wigton team were now in the ascendancy and came close to adding a further try but the ball was dropped with the line beckoning and game finished with Wigton victorious. Despite the adverse conditions WIgton controlled the game and deserved this victory and a well earned two weeks off before starting the new year with a home game against league leaders St Benedicts.
