Mike Penrice reports on another home win for Wigton.

Wigton's 24-0 win over visitors Upper Eden was effective, but certainly not pretty.

The Greens were dominant for the majority of the game, but were unable to find the precision needed to unlock a determined defence as often as they should have. A number of scoring chances went begging as a result of poor passing and poor decision making. A number of leading players seemed off their game, perhaps saving themselves for next week's encounter at Aspatria.

Aron Henderson was the first to score after about seven minutes following some probing work by David Hanabury. From early on in the game Wigton had the dominant scrum and with much of the first half being played in Upper Eden's territory, Wigton were able to exert a lot of pressure.

Ryan Clark was as lively as any on the day and put in a number of well weighted, testing grubber kicks which were nasty for the defence to deal with. One such kick produced a scrum for Wigton and Clark came into the line from full back, finding a gap and almost piercing the defence. Wigton kept possession until Henderson made a bustling run almost to the line. Prop Kevin Robinson was able to pick up and dive over the line to score. Johnny Charters landed the conversion to give Wigton a 12-0 lead.

Wigton dominated the rest of the half but were unable to add to the score. Overlaps were ignored, players were held up over the line and the ball squirted out of advancing scrums, but no points came.

The second half was, if anything, more dour. Upper Eden had somewhat more possession, but rarely looked threatening. A penalty for a dangerous tackle enabled Charters to push play into the corner for a lineout. Wigton looked to keep the ball close to the pack. Robert Marrs seemed try line bound when the ball was kicked from his grasp. A lurking Elliot Armstrong was handily placed to touch down the ball as it lay on the deck in goal. He celebrated his skilful finishing with rather more enthusiasm than the occasion seemed to merit, but Wigton now had a 17-0 lead.

Loose passes from both sides ended up with Stephen Harris booting the ball through, but he was beaten to the touchdown. A scrum against the head led to another Clark grubber setting up play near the line, but Wigton were unable to take advantage. A succession of catch and drives from lineout were tried. These made ground, but were not sufficient in themselves to break down the defence.

When the next try came, it was from Upper Eden possession. A scrum ball was moved out to the centre, but Andrew Brown made a great tackle and also won the ball. Quick hands saw the ball transferred to Owen Bonney on the wing. He still had work to do, but he took his chance and finished with aplomb. Charters added the extras to give Wigton a bonus point and a 24-0 lead.

Upper Eden finished with a flourish, but the closest they got to scoring was when they were bundled into touch five metres from Wigton's line. With the bar beckoning, the spectators were somewhat bemused as the referee found ten minutes of play to add on, but the final whistle enabled the Wigton camp to start concentrating on next week's game.

The sponsors nominated Rob Marrs, Rich Jackson, Aron Henderson and Josh Nicholson for the M O M award. It was won by the improving Aron Henderson - in only his second season of Senior rugby! Well done Aron.
