Wigton proved to be too strong up front for struggling Silloth and won by a comfortable margin of 33-7.
Wigton took the game to Silloth right from the start and were ahead after only 3 minutes from a Jonny Charters penalty when a Silloth player failed to roll away following a tackle. The same infringement happened 5 minutes later but this time the kick sailed wide of the posts. On 10 minutes David Hanabury, Wigtons inside centre was ‘taken out’ off the ball and the Silloth offender was shown a yellow card by the referee. This time Charters converted the penalty to give Wigton a 6-0 lead.
On 17 minutes the Wigton scrum drove forwards and the ball was eventually passed out wide to Richard Moffatt who drove through two defenders for an unconverted try in the corner, extending Wigton's lead to 11-0. On 28 minutes following a great passage of play, Andrew Brown put Kevin Robinson clean through with only the last defender to beat but the tackler forced a knock on and the ball was lost. However, just before half time, the Wigton backs carried the ball well and following another Brown offload, Charters touched down in the corner and he converted to give the hosts a lead of 18-0. This was further extended right on half time to 21-0 following another Charters penalty.
Wigton brought on Russell McLean, Ryan Wannop and Aron Henderson into the pack and the Wigton scrum remained dominant throughout, however, a number of dropped balls and debatable decision making allowed Silloth to remain in the game. Wigton's dominance was rewarded with a 3rd try on 63 minutes when, following some planned phases, young centre Stephen Harris powered over the line. The conversion was successful and the lead was stretched to 28 nil.
On 70 minutes the impressive Wigton pack drove Silloth backwards and Stuart Creighton touched down to give Wigton a bonus point try and a 33-0 lead. Silloth finally got some possession in the final minutes and their efforts were rewarded with a converted try in the corner and the game ended 33-7.
Wigton thoroughly deserved to win and were dominant in all aspects of the game. With six players Under 21 and only three over 30 there was a lot of energy around the performance giving them the first back to back wins since April '14!
The match Sponsors were over 40 'Elite Farmers' organised by Richard Chester and Paul Swainson - in particular they praised the performances of Rob Marrs, Jonny Charters and Andy Brown but it was loose head Kevin Robinson who picked up the M O M award. A mention also for 18 year old scrum half Sam Harrison who played well on home debut!
Next up an away match at Mirehouse on the 7th November.
