After a whole season without an away victory, Wigton deservedly won a close affair at Hawcoat Park as Martin Tickner reports.

Returning to the scene of the recent Cumbria Cup defeat, Wigton started brightly and Hawcoat Park were pinned in their own half.

Following an infringement, captain Fergus Ledingham took a quick tap before offloading to Richard Moffatt who powered over the line to give Wigton an early 5-0 lead. Wigton continued to push forward and Stephen Harris almost scored a second try but the ball was lost in sight of the line.

After all the Wigton pressure, Hawcoat Park eventually gained some possession and in their first meaningful attack, the hosts scored a converted try to lead 7-5. Wigton continued to play with pace and just before half time Owen Bonney scored a great try in the corner which Jonny Charters converted and Wigton regained the lead at 12-7. Almost straightaway Hawcoat Park conceded a penalty in front of the posts and Charters converted to give Wigton a half time lead of 15-7.

Hawcoat Park started the second half strongly and began to get more possession but resolute defending by Wigton kept the home team at bay and following a further infringement Jonny Charters kicked a penalty to extend the Wigton lead to 18-7. Hawcoat Park continued to attack and from a line out, their forwards forced their way over the line for a converted try and reduced the arrears to 18-14. The home team now sensed victory, but after a passage of plays, a misdirected pass along the back line was gratefully intercepted by Owen Bonney inside his own half, he drew the last defender and with a timely inside pass , Richard Moffatt was able to outrun the chasers and score beneath the posts. Jonny Charters converted and Wigton held a comfortable lead of 25-14 with only 5 minutes to go.

With the last play of the match, Hawcoat Park snatched a third unconverted try and a losing bonus point, the final whistle was blown and Wigton had won 25-19. It was a well deserved victory with the forwards dominating in the scrum throughout, the kicking from Jonny Charters and Gregg Smith was first class and the backs created plenty of opportunities keeping Hawcoat Park at bay for long periods of the game. This performance augurs well for the visit of local rivals Silloth this weekend’
