A superb free flowing performance from Wigton as they scored 13 tries to beat struggling Ashton-under-Lyne 79-5.
The game kicked off in glorious sunshine with Wigton on the front foot and the first try coming from Ryan Clark in the 2nd minute closely followed by tries from full back Gregg Smith and Owen Bonney and after only 8 minutes Wigton were leading 19-0. On 15 minutes Wigton had achieved a bonus point try through Stuart Creighton.
Ashton managed to get a foothold in the game and a lapse of concentration from the home team allowed Ashton to sneak a try in the corner which turned out to be Ashtons only score on the board. Two further tries from Josh Nicholson and Gregg Smith brought the half time score to 36-5.
The second half started in similar fashion with another Smith try closely followed by a great chip over the defenders by captain Fergus Ledingham, who managed to collect the ball and dive over the whitewash for another try. The next try was probably the best of all as Gregg Smith received the ball well inside his own 22, a powerful run took him past a couple of tacklers, he kicked the ball over the last defender, picked the ball up on the run and dived over for his 4th try of the game and Wigton led 53-5.
Wigton were now dominating a tiring Ashton side who tried their best and never gave up but were no match for a determined Wigton team. Four further tries from Stuart Creighton, Ryan Clark and two more from man of the match Gregg Smith taking his tally to 6. Jonny Charters kicked 7 conversions and the final score was 79-5.
A terrific performance from Wigton in particular from Gregg Smith, 6 tries at any level is fantastic.
