The Greens bring a losing bonus point back with them as Martin Tickner reports.

Wigton travelled to high flying Bolton on Saturday and came away with a well-deserved losing bonus point after a terrific end to end match played in glorious sunshine.

Bolton took the early initiative with two tries, one converted to lead 12-0. Wigton forced their way back into the match with a try by Stuart Creighton following a catch and drive, quickly followed by a second try after a great run by Brad Bouch who offloaded to Gregg Smith and with a chip over the top Gregg outran the defenders to score, both conversions were slotted between the posts and Wigton led 14-12.

Two penalties in front of the posts and a converted try gave the hosts a slender half time lead of 25-14. Things got worse for Wigton as Bolton scored a try seconds after the restart. A penalty for the home side stretched the lead to 35-17.

Wigton were now in the ascendancy and persistent pressure brought another converted try from Gregg Smith. However the recovery was short lived as Bolton pushed forward to claim their 5th try easily converted to extend their lead to 43-24. Wigton continued to exert pressure and were rewarded with a 4th try in the corner from Josh Nicholson converted by Gregg Smith.

The final result was Bolton 43 Wigton 31. Despite the defeat, the Wigton players can hold their heads high with a great performance. A big thank you from the Wigton supporters to the Bolton officials who were fantastic hosts.
