Wigton travel woes continue at Fleetwood

Wigton travelled down the M6 to Fleetwood on Saturday but were unable to build on last week’s home win against Oldham.

Two early penalty chances to take the lead were missed when both kicks drifted to the side of the uprights. The powerful Fleetwood pack pushed forward and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts easily converted to take a 3-0 lead on 20 minutes. Things got worse 5 minutes later, following a series of cross field passes the Fleetwood winger ran 50 metres along the touchline to touch down, the conversion was missed but the hosts led 8-0.

A penalty just before half time converted by Johnny Charters gave Wigton 3 points but immediately Fleetwood scored a second unconverted try to increase their to lead to 10 points. There was just enough time for another successful Wigton penalty by Johnny Charters to leave a half time score of 13-6.

The second half started very badly with Wigton on the back foot straight away and Fleetwood scored two quick tries both converted to increase their lead to 27-6. Wigton continued to play rugby but a mix up in defence left the Fleetwood centre a simple pick up and touch down, the kick was missed but the score was now a commanding 32-6.

The last few minutes saw Wigton having much more possession and were unlucky not to score a try when the ball was held up on the line and the opportunity was lost. It was a poor second half performance from Wigton and Fleetwood fully deserved their victory whilst Wigton look forward to a difficult home game this weekend against De La Salle.
