Martin Tickner reports (and thanks to Gareth Barrington for the photos).

A poor first half performance gave Wigton too much to do in the second half and were soundly beaten by a strong Cockermouth side seeking revenge for last weeks defeat at Wigton.

Cockermouth came out of the blocks quickly with their speedy winger racing 50 metres along the touch line to score as early as the 1st minute. At 7 nil down things got worse as both James Wilson and Elliott Armstrong were forced to leave the field with injuries after only 7 minutes on the clock. A second Cockermouth try under the posts on 14 minutes gave the hosts a comfortable 14-0 lead.

On 21 minutes another injury saw replacement Lance Hetherington being taken off the field leaving Wigton with no more replacement and 60 minutes still to play. A number of infringements saw the referee awarding penalty after penalty to the the home team allowing them to progress towards the Wigton line. Following a 5 metre line out, Wigton claimed the ball but a poor pass to Lewis Plackett saw his kick parried, the Cockermouth forwards seized the ball and as it was sprayed along the backs an overlap allowed Cockermouth scored a 3rd try in the corner. The half time whistle was blown immediately with the score on 19-0.

To their credit Wigton came out fighting after the break and took the game to a Cockermouth. However, following a good period of possession the ball was lost and Cockermouth took advantage to score a 4th try and extend their lead to 24-0. For the remaining 30 minutes Wigton were probably the better side and reduced the arrears on 40 mins when Nathan Bell touched down following a series of pick and goes by the forwards. Josh Leeson converted and reduced the lead to 24-7.

Once again with Wigton in the ascendency, the ball was lost and picked up by a Cockermouth played who raced 40 metres towards the corner, a try saving tackle by Charlie Studholme looked to have saved the day with Wigton supporters believing that the player was in touch before touching down, however the referee who was a full 40 metres away awarded a try, converted to extended the lead to 31-7. For the remainder of the match, Wigton were camped close to the Cockermouth line and despite a number of penalties the referee choose not to award a penalty try when Wigton were within touching distance.

A further injury to Lewis Plackett soured the afternoon, but Cockermouth were deserved winners following their first half display but Wigton can be satisfied with the way they took the game to Cockermouth in the second half. Thanks to Cockermouth for their hospitality.
