Pre-season Match vs Keswick on Saturday
Aug 12, 2010, 1:00 pm

Wigtons pre season preparations continue with a friendly at home to Keswick on Saturday 14th August - KO 3pm.

Both teams will be missing players due to holidays  but Wigton coach Nigel Beaty is looking forward to a an open game that will be good preparation for Wigton who are now promoted into North 1 West. He added "Keswick play at a high pace something we will need to get used to, we have selected a squad of 25 players after the trial game and will be looking at some combinations, how 'match fit' the players are and to see which young players are ready for the 1st XV "

Supporters will be keen to see how ex Whitehaven RL player Mark Deans shapes up as he can now commit to training and is available for the foreseeable future. Another player who made fleeting appearances last season is hooker/prop Steve Green, only 20 years old he is highly rated at Lowmoor road.

Youngsters new to the squad are Jordan Wood, Sam Noble, Ali Ledingham in the backs  and Jay Henderson and Peter March in the forwards. Testament to the great work the colts coaches led by Norman Foster and Trevor Richardson do at the club.

Jonny Charters is back at home after university and will be available depending on work, he impressed with some fine runs in the trial match last week. Scrum half Dan Reed returns to the squad after a year travelling and he will be pushing incumbent Tane Manihera hard for a place at No 9 - along with ex colt Paul Vickers.

Fast Paced Trial Match is a Winner!
Aug 9, 2010, 12:39 pm

Wigton continued their preparations for the season with a well attended trial match at Lowmoor Road on Saturday.

It will be a tough season for the 1st XV who will come up against some big name clubs in North 1 West after being promoted champions of North Lanc Cumbria last season.

Selection will be interesting with several players competing for each position. Training has been well attended (over 70 players) as the players look forward to testing themselves at a higher level.

As an amateur club the squad will continue to be based on home grown talent.

On Saturday 42 players were spilt into the Blues and Greens and after 90 mins of rugby it was 7 tries each.

Tries for the Greens were scored by Tom Gardner, David Hanabury (2), Chris Pattinson, Jonny Wood, David Percival and Steven Green.

Tries for the Blues by Tani Manihera (2) Ryan Clark, Callum Studholme, Paul Holdsworth,Jordan Wood and Jonny Charters.

The coaching team Nigel Beaty, Malcolm Brown and Greg Morton were pleased with the endeavour and the quality of the attacking play at times, there were some excellent individual performances. It was good to see many of last years colts showing their potential in particular Jordan Wood.

The pre season preparation continues with a 1st XV squad playing Keswick at Wigton this Saturday (14th august) 3 pm ko. On Sat 21st August a squad will take part in the Annan tournament followed by the final match when the 1st XV and Wanderers host Carlisle ( Thur 26th August 6-30pm kick off.)
